The "Sonic Viewer 2i" is a device that uses ultrasound to measure the propagation time of drilling cores and rock samples with high precision, and to determine their P-wave and S-wave velocities.
A sample is placed between two matched oscillators, and a high-voltage pulse is applied to one oscillator to generate ultrasound, while the other oscillator receives the waves propagating through the sample.
This data is rapidly converted to digital format and displayed as waveform data on a display, allowing for the propagation time to be read with high accuracy from the waveform.
